# How do I get smoke smell out of my house after a fire?

Odor molecules come off residue. As long as residue remains, the smell regenerates — which is why it seems to disappear and come back, and why it is always worse in warm, humid weather. Heat and moisture increase the rate at which the residue releases what it is holding.

So the practical question is never “what will neutralize this”. It is where is the residue that I have not removed yet , and there are three usual answers.

Porous material. Upholstery, mattresses, carpet and pad, curtains, clothing, books and paper, unsealed wood, insulation. These absorb residue rather than collecting it on the surface.

The HVAC system. If the system ran during or after the fire, it pulled smoke through the return, across the coil and the blower, and pushed it out through every supply register. A house can smell in rooms the fire never reached for exactly this reason.

Cavities and voids. Dry smoke in particular is fine and mobile, and it migrates into wall cavities, behind trim, into light fittings, and above ceilings — following the same pressure differences that moved the smoke during the fire.

Protein residue is the one that catches people out. There is often almost nothing to see, so a kitchen looks recoverable, and the smell is the worst of the four. Cleaning what is visible in that situation removes the small part of the problem.

The gap that creates is the whole problem: the concentration at which ozone would do something to odor is above the concentration at which it is safe to breathe. Professional use exists, in structures with nobody in them and a controlled re-entry, and that is a different activity from plugging a device in at home.

Residue removal comes before sealing, and sealing comes before repainting. Getting that backwards is the single most common way a house is declared finished and starts smelling again a month later — the sealer holds for a while, and then the residue underneath it wins.

Smoke residue is not dirt, and the four types behave so differently that using the wrong approach makes the damage permanent. Wet smoke from a slow, smoldering, low-heat fire is sticky and heavily staining, and wiping it smears it into the surface. Protein residue from a kitchen fire is nearly invisible, coats everything in a thin varnish, and carries the strongest odor of the four. Dry smoke from a fast, hot fire is powdery and travels into cracks and cavities. Fuel-oil soot from a furnace puff-back is oily and acidic.

Beyond technique, the residue is a respiratory irritant and combustion products are corrosive — metal, electronics and finishes continue to degrade while residue sits on them. Getting the sequence right, and getting the HVAC system out of circulation before anything else disturbs it, is the part that decides whether the smell comes back in the first humid week.
