# What is soot?

Professional required This page explains the work. It does not tell you how to do it, because doing it without training and equipment is unsafe. Soot is the solid residue of incomplete combustion — mostly carbon, carrying whatever else was in the fire. It behaves differently depending on what burned, which is why restoration names it by residue type rather than by color. Dry smoke, wet smoke, protein residue and fuel-oil soot each need different handling.

## The short version

 - Soot is particulate, and the particles are small enough to reach deep into the lungs and into every crevice in a building.
- What burned decides what the residue is. Synthetic materials, wood, cooking fats and heating oil all leave different deposits.
- Combustion products are acidic and corrosive. Metal, electronics and finishes degrade while residue sits on them.
- Wiping is often the wrong first move — some residue smears and becomes permanent when it is wiped.

Soot is what is left when combustion is incomplete — when there is not enough oxygen, or the fire is not hot enough, to burn the fuel fully. The bulk of it is elemental carbon, and attached to that carbon is a sample of everything else that was in the fire: partially burned hydrocarbons, acids, and residues of whatever the burning material contained.

The particles are very small, which has two consequences. They are a respiratory hazard, and they go everywhere — into cavities, behind trim, inside light fittings, through ductwork, and into the pores of anything absorbent.

This is the classification the trade actually uses, and it is not decorative. Approaching wet smoke as though it were dry smoke ruins finishes. Approaching protein residue by cleaning what is visible removes almost none of it.

## Why it keeps causing damage after the fire is out # Link to this section

Combustion produces acidic compounds, and they are still on the surfaces afterwards. Left in place, they:

 
- Etch and corrode metal — appliance finishes, plumbing fixtures, hardware, electrical contacts.

- Stain porous finishes progressively — the mark that was liftable in week one binds in week four.

- Degrade electronics from the inside, since residue is drawn in by cooling fans while the device runs.

 

That is the argument for urgency in what otherwise looks like a cosmetic problem. The clock on a fire loss does not stop when the fire does.

## Odor is the same substance # Link to this section

A house smells of smoke because residue is present and releasing volatile compounds. The smell strengthens in warm, humid weather because heat and moisture increase the release rate — which is why a house declared finished in February smells again in July.

Nothing that masks or oxidizes the air ends this. Removing the residue does, and where residue is inside porous material that cannot be cleaned, replacing the material does.

 

## Why this needs a professional

The four residue types are not degrees of the same thing. Dry smoke from a fast, hot fire is fine and powdery, travels into cavities, and lifts relatively cleanly. Wet smoke from a slow, smoldering, low-heat fire is sticky and dense, and wiping it smears it into the finish — a surface that could have been cleaned becomes a surface that has to be refinished. Protein residue from a cooking fire is a nearly invisible amber film that coats everything and carries the strongest odor of the four. Fuel-oil soot from a furnace puff-back is oily and acidic and is distributed by the duct system.

Beyond technique, there is a time factor. Combustion products are acidic, and they etch metal, corrode electrical contacts and stain porous finishes progressively. What is recoverable in week one is often not recoverable in month two, which is why identification comes before cleaning rather than after.

 
 

## What this means for your claim

Soot is where a fire claim quietly gets larger than the fire. Residue reaches rooms the flames never entered — carried by convection during the fire and by the HVAC system afterwards — and an estimate written from fire damage alone will miss most of it.

Two things to insist on. That the residue type is named in the scope , because "smoke damage" is a symptom and "protein residue in the kitchen, dry smoke throughout" is a scope. And that the HVAC system is assessed , since it is frequently omitted and frequently the reason odor returns after sign-off.

Photograph surfaces before anything is touched, including in rooms that look unaffected. A white glove on a windowsill two rooms away is evidence.

 
 

## What comes next

## Common mistakes

 - Wiping wet smoke residue, which smears it into the surface and turns cleaning into refinishing.
- Running the HVAC system afterwards, which distributes residue into rooms that were unaffected.
- Assuming rooms that look clean are clean. Protein residue is close to invisible.
- Leaving residue on metal and electronics for weeks. It is corrosive and the damage is progressive.
- Painting or sealing before removal, which traps the odor source and it returns in humid weather.

### Is soot dangerous to breathe?

The particles are small enough to reach deep into the lungs, and they carry acidic and partially combusted compounds. Disturbing settled residue — sweeping, wiping, running fans — puts it back into the air, which is why respiratory protection is part of the work rather than an optional extra.

 
 

### Can I just wash the walls?

It depends entirely on which residue you have, and getting it wrong is not neutral. Wet smoke smears into the finish when wiped, and what could have been cleaned then has to be refinished. Identifying the residue type before touching anything is the step that protects the surfaces.

 
 

### Why does the smell come back?

Because residue was left somewhere — inside porous material, in a wall cavity, or in the ductwork. Warm, humid weather increases how fast it releases, so a house that seemed fine in cold weather smells again in summer. The smell is a location problem, not a chemistry one.
