Why this matters more than usual here Link to this section
People read this site in bad conditions: on a phone in a dark hallway, on a degraded connection, with wet or shaking hands, sometimes with the power off. The accessibility work and the emergency-readability work are the same work.
What we do Link to this section
- Emergency warnings are announced first, marked as alerts, and are the first thing after the page landmarks.
- Emergency and checklist text is set one step larger than body copy and exceeds a 7:1 contrast ratio.
- Peril, water-category, smoke-type and safety-verdict indicators never rely on color alone. Each carries an icon and an explicit text label.
- Every page works with JavaScript disabled. Critical safety content renders from CSS alone.
- Full keyboard operation, visible focus indicators that are never removed, and anchor targets that clear the sticky header.
- Interactive targets are at least 24 by 24 pixels, and 44 by 44 for touch.
- Help and contact appear in the same footer position on every page.
- We honour reduced motion, reduced transparency and increased contrast preferences.
- Charts carry a text alternative and an equivalent data table. Diagrams are inline SVG with text equivalents, never images.

Automated accessibility checks run on every build and fail it on any violation. Manual screen reader testing is performed per template with NVDA and VoiceOver.

We publish these rather than claiming perfection:
- Manual screen reader testing covers each template, not every individual page.
- Some cited third-party sources are not themselves fully accessible. We cannot fix those, and note it here.
- Spanish pages are reviewed to the same standard, but our screen reader testing in Spanish is less extensive than in English.
