Fire and smoke damage
You can have severe smoke damage with no fire at all.

Smoke residue comes in four broad types — dry, wet, protein and fuel-oil soot — and which one you have depends on what burned rather than on the size of the fire. The type decides how cleaning has to be approached. Removing odor is a separate job from removing soot, and finishing one does not accomplish the other.

Protein residue is the one that gets missed Link to this section
There is nothing to see. Homeowners reasonably conclude there is nothing to clean, and then live with an odor that will not leave. It is thin, varnish-like, yellows paint and finishes, and produces an odor completely out of proportion to any visible damage.
If a kitchen fire involved food and the house smells wrong weeks later, this is the usual explanation.
A puff-back is smoke damage with no fire Link to this section
An oil-fired system that malfunctions can deposit oily soot throughout a house through the duct system. There was no fire. The affected area is nonetheless the entire conditioned envelope, and the HVAC system is a distinct scope from surface cleaning.
Odor is not the same job as soot Link to this section
Odor moves into porous contents, carpet and pad, the HVAC system and wall cavities. Methods range from HEPA filtration and source removal through thermal fogging, hydroxyl generators and sealing.
Suppression water, meanwhile, is rarely Category 1 by the time anyone can get in: it has run through a burned structure, picked up soot and char, and usually sat for hours. Treat it as at least Category 2 until someone qualified says otherwise.
Ozone is used in unoccupied structures only. It is a lung irritant. Anyone proposing ozone in a house you are living in is proposing something you should question.
Why this needs a professional
Wet smoke and protein residue smear under pressure, so dry-wiping them drives the residue into the finish and converts a cleanable surface into a refinishing item. Structural fire damage is not released to anyone until the fire department clears it, because fire weakens framing and hot spots reignite. HVAC contamination distributes residue through the whole conditioned envelope. Ozone is a respiratory irritant used only in unoccupied structures. None of these have a homeowner procedure, and this page does not provide one.
What comes next
