There are four smoke residues: dry, wet, protein and fuel-oil soot. Which one you have depends on what burned rather than how big the fire was, and it determines how cleaning has to be approached and how difficult the odor will be.
- Wet smoke — It smears under pressure, so dry wiping drives it into the finish and turns a cleanable surface into a refinishing line item.
- Dry smoke — It is the most forgiving residue, but it travels into cracks and wall cavities on heat, so surface appearance understates the spread.
- Protein residue — Homeowners routinely conclude there is nothing to clean because there is nothing to see, then live with an odor that will not leave. It is the residue most often missed.
- Fuel-oil soot — The distribution path is the HVAC system, so the affected area is the whole conditioned envelope, not the room the appliance is in.
Why this needs a professional
Identifying the residue and choosing the method is professional work. The wrong method — particularly dry-wiping a residue that smears — causes immediate and irreversible damage to the finish.
