That is a damage figure, not a restoration price, and it is worth reading precisely. It describes what an inch of external water does to a house — flooring, base of walls, insulation, contents, doors, and the removal of all of it — not what a drying company charges per day.
It is also specifically about floodwater, which is Category 3 by definition. That is why the number is as large as it is: contaminated water is not dried in place. Porous material it touched comes out.

The rows priced per unit, per day are the reason speed matters financially. A structure that starts drying on day one needs fewer machines for fewer days than the same structure starting on day four — and by day four more material is affected, so it needs more machines as well as more days.

Category 1 is clean water from a sanitary source, and material can often be dried in place.
Category 2 is significantly contaminated. Category 1 degrades into it as the water sits.
Category 3 is grossly contaminated — sewage, groundwater, floodwater, a backed-up drain — and porous material it soaked is removed rather than dried.
Removal costs a multiple of drying, because it adds demolition, disposal and a rebuild to a job that would otherwise have been machines and time. The single largest cost decision in a water loss is therefore not which company you use. It is which category the water is when work starts, and that is partly determined by how long it sat.

- Comparing a drying quote with a removal quote. They are different scopes and the second is inherently larger.
- Assuming clear water was clean water. Groundwater and floodwater are Category 3 whatever they look like.
- Discarding wet material before it is photographed and measured, which removes the basis for the estimate.
- Treating the source repair as someone else's problem. A dried building with a live leak is not finished.

Is there a per-square-foot price for water damage restoration?
Not one that transfers between jobs. The same square foot costs very differently depending on whether it is dried in place, torn out and rebuilt, or handled as contaminated Category 3 material — and all three are quoted in dollars per square foot. The unit is the same and the work is not.
Will insurance pay for the drying equipment?
Emergency mitigation is generally covered on a covered loss, and policies require you to prevent further damage, which is what the equipment is doing. Documentation is what makes it straightforward — daily moisture readings, an equipment log, and photographs. Equipment running past the point the structure was dry is the line item most often challenged.
Why is the estimate higher after they opened the wall?
Because the initial figure was written against what was visible. Water travels along the underside of flooring and down inside cavities, and wet insulation and framing are found rather than predicted. A revised scope after inspection is normal; a revised scope with no moisture readings behind it is not.
