My ceiling is sagging and full of water what do I do?

Stay out from under it and keep everyone else out of the room. A ceiling holding water can release the whole load at once, and drywall saturated with water is heavy. Cut the power to that room at the panel if you can do it safely. Do not puncture it to drain it.
The short version
- A sagging or bulging ceiling is holding a load it was never designed for, and it fails suddenly rather than gradually.
- Water above a ceiling is usually in contact with wiring and light fittings before it is visible below.
- Puncturing it to relieve the pressure is a controlled operation, not a household one.
- Move what you can from the room only if you can do it without going under the sagging area.
- Find and stop the source upstairs. The ceiling is the symptom.

Drywall holds water and gets heavy, and the fasteners holding it are in shear. Nothing about that arrangement degrades gracefully. The panel sags as it absorbs, the sag creates a low point that collects more water, and the added weight concentrates at exactly the point that is already weakest.
Then it lets go — the panel, the water on top of it, and any insulation that came with it, in one movement.
The visible bulge is a poor guide to how much is up there. Water spreads across the top of a ceiling and pools wherever the structure lets it, so the wet area is normally much larger than the sagging one.

Water moving across a ceiling cavity reaches wiring, junction boxes and recessed light housings before it appears below. By the time there is a stain, water has usually been in contact with the electrical system for some time.
If the panel is dry and reachable without standing in water, cut the circuits for that room and the one above it. If it is not, call your utility from outside and have the supply cut at the meter. Do not operate the light switch in that room to check.

Water lands on a ceiling from a limited set of places:
- A supply line or waste pipe in the floor above
- A bathroom — a failed shower pan, a leaking trap, an overflow
- An appliance with a water connection upstairs
- A roof leak, if the ceiling is on the top floor
- A condensate line from an air handler in an attic
- An overflowing gutter backing water under the eaves
Shut the water at the main if you cannot identify it quickly. That costs you nothing for an hour and stops the situation getting worse while you look.

This becomes an ordinary water loss with a head start on you, because the cavity above the ceiling has been wet longer than the ceiling has been visibly wet. Insulation, the floor structure above, and the top of the wall assemblies are all involved.
EPA’s window applies to all of it: material dried within 24 to 48 hours mostly does not grow mold. The part that makes a ceiling failure difficult is that the wet material is enclosed, and drying an enclosed cavity means opening it.
Why this needs a professional
Half-inch drywall weighs roughly 1.6 pounds per square foot dry, and it absorbs a great deal of water. A saturated section of ceiling, plus the water pooled on top of it and the insulation holding more, is a substantial mass suspended over a room — and it does not give way progressively. The fasteners hold until they do not, and then the whole panel comes down at once.
The electrical hazard arrives first and is invisible. Water travelling across a ceiling reaches junction boxes, recessed fittings and cable runs before it reaches the surface you can see, so a light fitting in that room can be energized and wet at the same time.
Controlled relief — draining the pooled water through small openings from a safe position, working outward from the edges — is something restoration technicians do routinely, from outside the failure zone, with the power confirmed off. It is not a job to improvise standing on a stepladder underneath it.
What this means for your claim
A ceiling failure is loud evidence of an upstairs source that has usually been running longer than anyone realized, and the duration is what the claim turns on. Sudden and accidental escape of water is generally covered; a long-running leak is generally treated as a maintenance condition.
So photograph the ceiling before it comes down or is taken down, and photograph what you find upstairs when the source is located. If a fitting failed, keep the failed part. The physical component is the strongest evidence available that the failure was sudden.

- Moving furniture out from under the sagging area rather than from around it.
- Treating it as a ceiling problem. The ceiling is where an upstairs failure became visible.
Common follow-up questions
Can I just put a bucket under it?
A bucket catches a drip. A bulge is not a drip — it is a volume of water sitting on top of a panel that is holding it, and the failure mode is the panel coming down rather than the water finding its way through. Standing under it to place the bucket is the part to avoid.
The ceiling has stopped dripping. Is it over?
Not necessarily. Dripping stops when the water has found somewhere else to go, which is often into a wall cavity or along a joist to another room. Stopping is not the same as draining, and the material above is still wet either way.
Will the whole ceiling need replacing?
Often the affected section rather than the whole plane, and the deciding factors are the water category and how far it spread. Category 3 water — from a waste pipe, a toilet or a roof leak that has run through insulation — means the porous material comes out rather than being dried.
