Can mold grow on plastic?

Not on the plastic itself — plastic is not a food source. It grows on the film of dust, soap residue and organic matter that settles on the surface, which is why it appears on shower curtains, food containers and stored items. Clean the film and control the moisture and it stops.

Mold is a fungus, and fungi feed on organic material. Cellulose is ideal — which is why paper, cardboard, the paper facing on drywall, cotton and untreated wood grow it so readily.
Most plastics are synthetic polymers with no nutritional value to a mold. The growth you see on a shower curtain or a storage bin is feeding on what is on the plastic, not on the plastic.
That film builds up from ordinary use: soap scum and body oils in a bathroom, dust and skin cells anywhere, food residue on containers, and airborne grease in a kitchen. Add moisture and it becomes a substrate.

EPA’s difficult category is porous material, where mold fills the spaces and crevices and may be impossible to remove completely. Non-porous surfaces are the opposite: the growth is genuinely on top, and cleaning with detergent and water followed by complete drying removes it rather than reducing it.
Three things make a plastic surface harder than it looks:
- Texture. Moulded grain, matte finishes and foamed plastics hold the film in places a cloth does not reach.
- Degradation. Old plastic that has become chalky or crazed has micro-texture that behaves like a porous surface.
- Seams and gaskets. Container lids, seals and hinge lines trap both moisture and film, and are usually where it starts.

There is no practical way to eliminate all mold and mold spores in the indoor environment; the way to control indoor mold growth is to control moisture.
A shower curtain that never dries between uses, a bathroom with no working extractor, a basement above EPA’s 30 to 60 percent humidity range, a garage that swings through the dew point, a sealed container packed while something inside it was damp.
Cleaning the plastic and returning it to the same conditions gets you the same result on the same timescale.

Plastic is visible, non-porous and easy to inspect, which makes it a useful early indicator. If plastic in a space has grown mold, the absorbent things stored alongside it — cardboard boxes, fabric, books, paper, upholstered items — have had the same exposure and are much harder to recover.

What this means for your claim
Mold on stored plastic is almost never a claim in itself. What it can be is evidence about a space — a basement, a garage, a crawlspace or a closet that has been sitting damp for long enough to grow it, which usually means something else in that space is affected too.
If the storage area was wet from a covered water event, the contents in it are part of the contents claim. Photograph and list before anything is cleaned or discarded, and check whether the structure around them was dried, because plastic showing growth is a humidity reading you did not take.

Common follow-up questions
Is the mold on my shower curtain dangerous?
It is ordinary household mold, and CDC's position is that species does not change the response. For most people it causes nothing. People with asthma, a mold allergy, a weakened immune system or chronic lung disease can react more strongly, which is a reason to deal with it rather than live with it.
Can I put moldy plastic containers in the dishwasher?
For food containers that is usually effective — the detergent and hot water do exactly what EPA's method describes, and the drying cycle finishes it. Check seals and lid grooves afterwards, since those are where film survives a wash.
Why does it grow inside sealed containers?
Because something was damp when it was sealed. A closed container holds that moisture against its contents indefinitely, and if anything organic is in there — paper, fabric, a cardboard divider — it has moisture, food and no air movement. Dry contents completely before sealing anything.
