Combustion produces acidic compounds, and smoke carries them as fine particulate. Any device with a cooling fan pulled that air through itself for as long as it had power — which for most equipment means for the duration of the fire.

The residue settles on circuit boards, connectors, contacts and heatsinks. Then two things start.

Corrosion. Acidic deposits attack metal traces, solder joints and pin contacts. It is slow, continuous, and it does not stop when the device is unplugged.

Conductivity. Some deposits conduct, particularly once they absorb humidity from the air. A layer of conductive residue across a board is a set of connections the designer did not intend.

That second point is why powering a device on is the wrong test. Applying voltage to a board with conductive residue on it can destroy something that was recoverable.

Dry smoke from a fast, hot fire is fine and powdery, and it is the most recoverable case — it settles rather than binds, and decontamination often succeeds.

Wet smoke from a slow, smoldering fire is sticky and dense, coats components rather than dusting them, and is much harder to remove from a board without damaging it.

Protein residue from a cooking fire is the deceptive one. It is nearly invisible, so equipment looks untouched, and it is a greasy film across everything inside the case.

Fuel-oil soot from a furnace puff-back is oily and strongly acidic, and because it is distributed by the duct system it reaches equipment in rooms nowhere near the appliance.

Knowing which one you have tells a specialist what they are dealing with before they open anything, which is why the identification is worth having early.

This is the practical argument for treating electronics as urgent in a loss where everything else feels more urgent. The building will still be there in a month. The laptop may not be, in any meaningful sense.

A drive can often be read when the device around it cannot be restored, and a specialist recovers data from hardware that is a write-off. If a device holds something irreplaceable — photographs, records, work — say so first, because the priority changes the approach.

Do not attempt to power a drive up to copy files off it. That is the same mistake as testing the device, with more at stake.

Keep them somewhere dry and as clean as possible, rather than in the affected room. Electronics sit in the contents part of the claim, and they are among the items most often settled badly, because the loss is invisible. A television that switches on looks undamaged and may have weeks left.

Two things help. An inventory with model numbers and, where possible, purchase dates — photographed rather than remembered. And a specialist assessment rather than a visual one, because "it works" is not an assessment of a device with acidic residue inside it. If your policy is replacement cost rather than actual cash value, that distinction is worth real money on this category in particular.

It turns on and seems fine. Is it?

Not necessarily, and the fact that it turns on is not evidence either way. Corrosion progresses inside a device that works, and the failure typically arrives weeks or months later. A specialist assessment is the way to establish it; switching it on is the way to risk it.

Can I clean it myself?

Cleaning the outside of a case does nothing about residue on the boards, and opening equipment to clean the inside without the right materials risks static damage and spreading the deposit. This is one of the narrow areas where a specialist genuinely does something you cannot.

What about appliances rather than computers?

Same principle, and there is a safety dimension as well. Anything with a motor, a heating element or a mains connection that has residue inside it should be assessed before it is used, because the failure mode is not only that it stops working.
